Wenzel Chooses Virginia Tech

Wenzel Chooses Virginia Tech
Carleigh Wenzel

Carleigh Wenzel of San Antonio, Texas, came off the board in 2022 with her commitment to Virginia Tech.  The 5-foot-11 guard is on the ProspectsNation.com ELITE 100 Watch List and is poised for a spot when the rankings come out.

Wenzel’s recruiting process started winding down this winter as she announced her finalists – Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State, Northwestern, Oregon, Stanford, Utah and Virginia Tech.

Interestingly enough the Hokies were actually cut at one point this winter.  But without the distraction of visits Wenzel focused on watching games, studying style of play and the relationships forged in the process.  Suddenly the pendulum started swinging for Tech.

The thing that stood out the most was that she had a meaningful relationship with everyone on staff and was excited at the prospect of the head coach, Kenny Brooks, taking the lead on her individual development.

Wenzel will provide Kenny Brooks with a versatile weapon on the perimeter. Her length and style of play will remind Hokie faithful of current wing Cayla King. Like King, Wenzel’s ability to play multiple positions and understand scouting reports should lead to sustained success for Brooks’ program over the next few years in Blacksburg. Here’s a take on Wenzel’s game from our Dallas Training Academy in October 2020:

Wenzel has had a fantastic 12-month run. She’s attended six academies over the years and has really matured both physically and with her outside shot since the beginning of 2018. Wenzel has the length, athleticism and skill to be a multi-purpose guard at an elite level going forward. As she keeps filling out, her game is well positioned to take another step forward.

Wenzel is the first commitment for Virginia Tech in 2022 class.
